When news of the imminent shuttering of Jazz at Pearl's came out several weeks ago, it was accompanied a bit of teary melodrama from owner Kim Nalley, and now it seems that Pearl's downfall can also be attributed to increased competition and, uh, gas prices: "Nalley emphasized she is not blaming the new Yoshi's in San Francisco for her club's woes. Still, Pearl's, like other nightclubs, has had to compete in an increasingly competitive market place. Yoshi's opened its club in San Francisco in November, and there are dozens of other local clubs and restaurants that offer live jazz — and all are dealing with tough economic times and high gas prices."
