Receiptrocity: Asking For Bread at Bar Jules Will Cost You

Welcome back to Receiptrocity, wherein entertaining dining/drinking receipts are shared. If you've got an interesting or outrageous receipt, scan/photograph it and send it on over to sf@eater.com. Today's entry from Hayes Valley newbie Bar Jules comes via the Bunrab folks, who are always on their A-game, camera in hand.

From the Daily Feed: "The runny yolks and juices were too good to waste and I asked the server if I could have a piece of bread so I could sop them up. She appeared with two pieces of olive oil rubbed toast and I cleaned my plate completely ... When the bill arrived I saw a charge of five bucks for toast."

Good News/Bad News: Bar Jules

2007_11_barjulesin.jpg

Since opening about three weeks ago, Bar Jules has already played host to an Iron Chef or two en route to quickly becoming one of the more sought-out destinations in town for the foodie crowd. The tiny, daily-changing menu showcases the best produce of the day, making Bar Jules the latest in the long line of California cuisine specialists. So, how has the first month shaped up down in Hayes Valley? Glad you asked.

1) Bad News: "On a Friday evening, at 9:10 PM ...they had run out of ... food! Seriously ... 9:10 PM ... no main courses available (that's right ... no Fish ... no Meat!!!)" [Yelp]

Week in Reviews Blog Edition: Bar Jules, Balboa Cafe, Spork and MORE!

We don't do reviews per se here at Eater, but we hear there are plenty of local bloggers that do. Know of a local blog that should be on the Eater radar? Do share.

Earlier in the week, 7x7's Sarah Sung stopped by the newly-open Bar Jules in Hayes Valley, with fairly decent results (and the color scheme ain't all that bad): "Since the menu's variable and the space seats about 50 (my guess), the selection, while thoughtful, is small ... And you&'ll be happy to note that the mustard, olive and turquoise colors on the walls work. They pop, making it a vibrant, yet cozy space all at once." Also of note: some snazzy bathrooms. Color us intrigued. [Bits + Bites]

Bar Jules Reveal: The Interior and the Menu

2007_11_barjulesin.jpg

As mentioned yesterday, opening tonight is plywood vet Bar Jules. Avid readers and diners—not to mention people with eyeballs—will be happy to know that the interior color scheme has been toned down a bit from the initial aesthetic shock we found there some weeks ago. Also, the liquor license has yet to go through, so BJ is BYOB at this point, FYI. Jessica Boncutter is running things at 609 Hayes, and with her pedigree (Zuni, Hog Island, River Cafe), the menu—scrawled on a chalkboard; pic after the jump—will change daily. Be warned though: this might be the most limited menu in the entire city. Witness:

The Dish: Tuk Tuk Thai Two, Bar Jules

All new openings—big and small— are served up on a regular basis by The Dish. Notice a debut in your 'hood? Your sightings to sf@eater.com.

1) Tuk Tuk Thai Two: Right when you thought that the name of North Beach's newest Thai place couldn't get any more alliterative, they go and add "two" to the end of the name. Anyway, as mentioned earlier 'round these here parts, Tuk Tuk is a new restaurant from the brothers behind San Francisco's King of Thai Noodle House and Berkeley's Tuk Tuk Cafe. It's in the former Fogon space on Union, and looks to be your standard Thai joint, with most prices under $8. It's open everyday at 11am, but more importantly, it's open late, until 1am nightly. 659 Union Street, between Columbus and Stockton, North Beach; (415) 445-7839 [Eater Staff]

Plywood Report: Domo, Bar Jules, Mint Plaza, More

Welcome back to the Plywood Report, your regular, all-encompassing look at the city's next generation of restaurants and bars. See some plywood in your 'hood? Drop us a line, would you? Extra credit and a gold star if you include pretty photos.

1) Hayes Valley: According to a Hayes Valley tipster, things have been busy at Domo, the upcoming sushi joint from Luke and Kitty Sung on Laguna and Linden (pictured). It's still unclear if they are going to keep the bright blue bath tiling adorning the facade, but as you can tell from the photo, they've been doing plenty of upheaval. As mentioned earlier, the traditional place will be small (20-25 seats) and full of wood, lending a casual vibe. [PLYWOOD]

2) Bonus Hayes Valley: Just up the street, the training wheels are nearly off at Bar Jules at 609 Hayes. Friends and family night has come and passed, five-star reviews have been purchased on Yelp, orchids are scattered about, and a preliminary menu is written on the chalkboard. And yes, for the most part, the paint job made it too. [PLYWOOD]

Hayes Valley Quite Possibly Colorblind

2007_11_barjules.jpg
The sunglasses! They do nothing!

Coming in the wake of the very green exterior of La Boulange de Hayes, we may have a second Hayes Valley assault on diners' rods and cones at Bar Jules, above. The construction folks did warn us that these colors weren't final, and they haven't done anything with the facade yet. Preliminary paint selection aside, the space itself looks very promising. Looking into the room, to the right is the pictured little cafe area with bench and to the left is a developing bar area. Walnut-capped tables will be involved as well, and there appears to be a back room. Late November is the word. As for the colors, maybe they'll look better in the full context of things. Maybe. Plywood Report: Out the Door, Bar Jules and MORE!

Welcome back to the Plywood Report, your regular, all-encompassing source for the next generation of San Francisco restaurants still in various stages of construction. Big, small, ugly? We've got you covered. See something a-brewing in your neighborhood? Drop us a line. Also: a gold star if you include photos.

2007_11_outhedoor.jpg

1) Pacific Heights: Checking the above scene at 2232 Bush Street (right off Fillmore), the third location of Out the Door by Charles Phan remains a ways off. The plumbing was just completed this week, but that late fall prognostication may have to be pushed back a bit. [PLYWOOD]

2) Hayes Valley: Quoth a Hayes Valleyian, "This little spot in Hayes Valley taking over what used to be the Don't Call It Frisco Laundromat (next door to Suppenkuche) is going to be called Bar Jules. It's on 609 Hayes Street between Laguna and Buchanan. Construction has been going on for at least 7-8 months. I saw a poster on the window saying they'll be open in November 2007 but the latter half of the month would be my guess. Would have snapped a picture but my camera phone a piece of." [Eater Inbox]
