EaterWire: John's Ocean Beach Cafe Faces Demolition, Bar News at Cyrus and More!

2008_05_johnsOBC.jpgWAY OUTER SUNSET—One of the items on the agenda for tomorrow's Planning Commission meeting involves the possible demolition of John's Ocean Beach Cafe, the old school diner on Sloat Boulevard, just a stone's throw from the Great Highway and the zoo. In its place would be "three new mixed-use, five-story, 60-foot-tall buildings" and an open-air market. The preliminary recommendation is approval, which doesn't bode well for the yesteryear's diner. [EaterWire]

HEALDSBURG—Camper English has some updates on Scott Beattie, the big-name bartender at Cyrus: "He had big news to share- as of last weekend, he's no longer working behind the bar there. He'll still be running the show, though, so your drinks will be just as tasty as ever. So from now on, he'll be a backseat muddler." [Alcademics]

EaterWire: Sunset Changes, Cyrus' Haute Burger Takeover

2008_05_chug.jpgTHE SUNSET—The Bay to Breakers is next weekend, and more often than not, the first thing you see when crossing the finish line is Lincoln Tavern on the corner of 19th and Lincoln. It was Molly Malone for a number of years, and now it has changed owners once again. Fresh signage will be up within the week—"definitely before the Bay to Breakers"—and the new name will be ... wait for it ... Chug Pub. [EaterWire]

HEALDSBURG—A few weeks ago, we mentioned how Team Cyrus was taking on a new project at a nearby bar and grill. Well, it's here and it's good: "Just a couple weeks into its new ownership, The Healdsburg Bar and Grill is noticeably changed under the watch of Cyrus' Nick Peyton and chef Douglas Keane. Though the look and feel is still very much the same as the old HBG--casual inside tables, t-shirted waitrons and kids running around the bocce ball court outside--the menu has been elevated to haute burger status." And it's only $7.75. [SRPD]

EaterWire: Cyrus Gets New PR, Yogen Fruz Location Revealed, Starbucks' Secret Out?

2008_04_cyrus.jpgHEALDSBURG/PR LAND—Our little Cyrus is growing up so quickly. Fresh off a James Beard nomination for best regional chef, Douglas Keane and Cyrus have signed on with Bullfrog & Baum, the public relations agency biggie from New York, where they work with industry heavies like Bobby Flay, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Joel Rubuchon. Via ties in Vegas, they also occasionally speak for Hubert Keller and Michael Mina. Might Keane follow in their footsteps? [EaterWire Inbox]

EMBARCADERO CENTER—Last Thursday brought news of Yogen Fruz, a new (Canadian) frozen yogurt franchise that tapped San Francisco as one of its first American markets to, uh, conquer. As a commenter noted, the first location will be located in Three Embarcadero Center, and according to the Canadian froyoers, they plan to open 35 Bay Area locations in the next five years. EaterWire: Last Day for Perry's, Team Cyrus' New Project

2008_03_perrysshutter.jpgFINANCIAL DISTRICT—Right this moment and lasting into the evening hours, Perry's Downtown is tossing its grand finale party in its last day of downtown service. Tomorrow, it will shutter and prepare for the move down the hill to Steuart Street. Bonus unconfirmed rumor: we hear there are special bon voyage t-shirts. No, really. [EaterWire, previously]

HEALDSBURG—Not only are Cyrus owners Douglas Keane and Nick Peyton installing that bakery next door to their prized restaurant, but now, they have taken over the Healdsburg Bar & Grill: "The restaurant, which has a dining patio with bocce court, has been closed for minor renovations and will re-open in mid-April with new lighting, a restored wood floor and banquette seating. The basic concept — a family-friendly, casual dining spot — will stay the same and prices will be comparable. The menu will offer build-your-own burgers, thin-crust pizza and fresh salads to go with the cold beer on tap ... It will be similar to their casual St. Helena restaurant, Market, but without the white tablecloths." [SRPD]

EaterWire: Cyrus Joins Relais & Chateaux Club

2007_11_cyrus.jpgHEALDSBURGCyrus is among seven new North American gourmet restaurants and/or hotels inducted to the prestigious Relais & Chateaux club. Restaurants must apply for admission into the French club, with the application process often taking several years. In case you're wondering, the only other local restaurants already in the elite club are the French Laundry, Meadowood and Gary Danko (proving that not all French elitists dislike Monsieur Danko). [EaterWire Inbox]

POTRERO HILL—PotHi local staple Couleur Cafe continues to shake things up with some updates. From Chowhound: "The recent updates -- a whole flight of new mussel preparations and a much improved steak frites - are particularly worth a try ... They now have nice live acoustic music on Sunday evenings and are about to start that on Wednesdays as well." Usually, menu upheavals and live music promotions are telltale signs that a restaurant is struggling, but the post seems to suggest that Couleur Cafe merely continues to improve on a good thing. Any Potrero peeps know anything? [CH]

GHIRARDELLI SQUARE—Speaking of possible semi-desperate promotions, McCormick & Kuleto’s is now offering a Happy Hour Bar Menu: "Every Monday through Friday (3pm-6pm) you can feast on Bay Shrimp cocktails, Black Mussels, a Diestel Turkey Breast Quesadilla, Spicy Buffalo Wings, and a half-pound Cheeseburger for just $1.95 (with a two drink minimum)." What Happy Hour ends at 6pm with a two-drink minimum, you ask? One that caters to the tourist crowd, obv. And that $2 burger, while tempting, might not seem so great when you remember that In-N-Out is down the street. [SF City Dish]
