Eater PSA: Benefit Tonight For Range's Brooke Arthur

Tonight at Cantina at 8pm, there will be a very special benefit for Brooke Arthur, the head bartender at Range who has sustained very serious injuries in the wake of a fire. Because Jordan McKay of 7x7's drink blog Buzzed put it more eloquently than we could, here's what he has to say:

The girl you see in the photo is one of the great characters of San Francisco mixology. Full of life, joy, and wit (as you can tell in the photo), Brooke is the head bartender at Range, where she runs one of the most dynamic cocktail programs in the city. I've gotten to know her a little over the last year and can say that she possesses a unique ability to brighten any room she walks into (and not just because of her blonde hair and incandescent smile).

Unfortunately, due to a tragic fire in her apartment, Brooke today is sequestered in the burn ward at St. Francis Memorial, where she is currently breathing with a ventilator and undergoing serious treatment. Even the flowers that Brooke's legion of friends and fans might want to send are not allowed into her infection-proof chamber.

Again, 8pm tonight at Cantina is the benefit; if you can't make it tonight, please do consider the myriad other ways you can help at brookearthur.com, the site her family has put together. Our best to Brooke and her loved ones, and here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

Winter Vacation: Range, Glas Kat Return This Week

After the madness of the holiday season, many restaurants often take a break, recharge the batteries and maybe undertake a renovation or two. On that note, here are some updates from a trio of restaurants readying for 2008.
2008_01_range.jpg

1) Everyone's favorite Mission Michelin, Range, will return on Thursday, January 10th. The entire storefront is decked out in brown paper, which suggests that some remodeling just might be in the works. For those of you chomping on the bit, the January menu has been posted, complete with a bread pudding sighting.

2) Down on Fourth Street—right next to Elizabeth Falkner's Orson, actually—the Glas Kat Supper Club is putting the finishing touches on a facelift that included a new paint job, new lighting and other miscellaneous fixings. It will reopen today, and its website would like you to know that the Glas Kat is perfect for receptions of 80-800 persons.

3) File this in the "if you have to ask ..." category if you must, but the French Laundry is in the midst of its annual January vacation. Food Jesus will resume dinner service at his flagship on Friday, January 18th, and perhaps even more importantly, the reservation line is also closed during this time period, reopening the morning of the 18th.

Week in Reviews Blog Edition: Sens, Range and MORE!

Bay Area bloggers were all over the place this week, hitting places new and old, near and far. And of course, it being Friday, The Bauer takes his second ride on the Pizza Friday Express, this time to the big O. From Sens to Sea Salt, let the Week in the Blogosphere commence.

1) The ladies at 7X7's food blog, Bits and Bites, take their turn at the Embarcadero Center's splashy newcomer Sens:

The one and only drawback to Sens ... is getting to it, via an elevator and hallway buried within the promenade level of the mall-ish Embarcadero 4 building. But the location pays off once inside, where your view from the dining room or spacious patio is of swaying palms lined like sentries in front of the iconic Ferry Building.
The chorus is getting louder on this one: with Dotson and Lydon, there's great lineage behind the restaurant, good enough food (including the lamb: "by far the best lamb that has entered my mouth this year"), but my: that location. [Bits and Bites]

After the jump: Range, Arang and maybe even an East Bay Bauer sighting >>
