NOB HILL: Another mom-and-pop shop down the drain: Mediterranean Spirit, home of arguably the best falafel in town, closed unexpectedly. Early signs indicate that an Afghan kabob will take its place on Polk Street. A Yelpster reports: "Mediterranean Spirit was one of the friendliest restaurants in the Gulch, they made a tasty falafel, great hummus and baba ganoush. Another victim of Polk St gentrification perhaps? Rising rents have removed much of the culture and many of the small, affordable and family run businesses from Polk. Yay yuppies and weekend hipster crowds, thanks a lot." [Shutter Inbox, Yelp]
RUSSIAN HILL: A little higher up on Polk Street, there's plenty of action at Tablespoon. We really have no idea what a "drink kitchen" is, but that's what Tablespoon is turning into. Chef Roland Robles will stay on, but will shed the New American bistro theme in favor of a "shareable, snackier menu." Oh, and the new name: Bar Johnny. [Chron]
