From a tipster, we have word of yet another sudden shuttering in North Beach. This time, the victim is Washington Square Bar and Grill, or as it is known to its patrons, the Washbag: "Washington Square Bar and Grill closed effective January 1, with little explanation. I haven't been past the space, but I was with an employee when he got the call at 10 a.m. on New Year's Day. It's too bad - I know Guy and Rose poured their hearts into that place." The Washbag was a noted Herb Caen haunt, and its nightly jazz offerings made it an old-school, mom-and-pop favorite on the corner of Powell and Union. Anyone with further details on the closing is encouraged to share. [Shutter Inbox]
