Some trivia for your holiday weekend: a new California law will take effect on January 1 that will allow chefs to buy directly from farmers. That's right, even though it's been practiced and unenforced for years, chefs buying directly from farmer's markets has been technically illegal: "The new law allows chefs to buy restaurant fare directly from farmers and allows farmers to sell products created from their produce, such as jam, at their own farm stands and items such as bottled water or soda."
