Openings Gone Wild: Ozumo Brings Sumos to Oakland

New, 1 comment

Oakland: Tonight is the grand opening extravaganza for Ozumo Oakland, the East Bay offshoot of the popular FiDi joint, and make no mistake: if the street blockades are any indication, it's going to be a party. In fact, Ozumo will herd in some special guests—literally—to mark the occasion:

A portion of Grand Avenue in Oakland will be closed this evening to make room for sumo wrestlers, the mayor and others who will celebrate the opening of a new Japanese restaurant

Oh yes, a world champion sumo wrestler by the name of Byambajav Ulambayar and "some of his colleagues" will, um, fight each other in a wrestling ring constructed on Grand Avenue. We never thought we'd see the day when Oakland and its mayor would block streets for restaurant-related sumo wrestling, but here it is. PS: As always, photos are welcome from you East Bay folks.
