Alvin Edlin, the man who made Noe Valley's Bud's Ice Cream Store a revered local icon, has died at age 96: "Eventually, word got around San Francisco about Bud's, at 24th and Castro streets, and soon the lines were up and down the block as patrons waited more than half an hour for a heaping, rich-with-butterfat, dripping-with-calories sugar cone of Bud's caramel. By the 1970s, if you said 'ice cream?' to a knowledgeable San Franciscan, the one-word reply would come back, 'Bud's.'" [Chron]
