Union Square: We've already made clear our feelings on the sudden Bay Area surge of calling everything a gastropub, but we'd like to interrupt your regularly-scheduled programming to point out that Urban Tavern, the most high-profile two-week-old gastropub in town, is missing something: beer. As pointed out by local beer guru William Brand, exactly zero beers are offered on tap; the only offerings are about ten bottles of the standard restaurant variety (Sierra, Stella, Anchor, etc). The restaurant says there are no plans to have beer on tap either. Thus, a modest new rule proposal: if you call your restaurant a gastropub, you should probably have beers on tap.
