Given the messy situation developing between the still-shuttered Original Joe's and the newly-opened Uptown Joe's, Eater HQ thought it might be a good idea to compare/contrast the restaurants' respective menus and determine if the Duggans (of Original Joe's) have justification for their pissy fit or if they're just getting their panties in a wad over another "Joe's" in the mix.
Based on the menu still up on the Original Joe's website and the Uptown menu—both in full below for your viewing pleasure—there's a lot of justification (though whether or not that translates legally is another question). By our count, of the 35+ menu items at Uptown Joe's, only three don't appear on the Original Joe's menu. Of course, there's the argument that much of the menu consists of the standard Italian-American dishes like garlic bread, veal scallopini, etc. While that's certainly valid, not only are the basic breakdowns of the menus very similar, but in several cases, the wording is pretty much exactly the same:
Some of the more blatant examples:
Original: "Antipasto: Molinari salami, ham, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, sliced onions, pepperoncini, black olives and anchovies, drizzled with oil & vinegar. For one 6.50 For two 9.50"
Uptown: "Antipasto: salami, cheese, ham, pepperoncini, black olives, sliced tomatoes, and onions over crispy romaine lettuce drizzled with virgin olive oil and red wine vinagar. For one $8.50 for two $14.95"
Original: "Caesar salad: Crisp romaine lettuce with toasted herb croutons and grated parmesan cheese tossed in Caesar dressing"
Uptown: "Caesar salad: Crisp romaine lettuce with toasted herb croutons and grated parmesan cheese"
Original: "Joe’s Special: fresh ground chuck saute?ed with spinach, eggs and onions 9.95, add mushrooms +1.00"
Uptown: "Uptown Joe's Special: ground beef sauteed with onions, spinach and eggs $13.95, with mushrooms 16.95"
