Lake Chalet

1520 Lakeside Drive, Lake Merritt
Phone: 510-653-8660
Status: Opening tonight.
The East Bay spinoff of the Beach and Park Chalet makes its public debut tonight, and tomorrow, Lake Chalet will kick off normal lunch hours as well. The project is Oakland's highest-profile endeavor in a while for several reasons: it's in the historic 100-year-old boathouse directly on the water, it cost a cool $21 million, and most notably, it's really, really big—as in, 450 seats in the middle of a recession big. Just glancing at the website gives an idea of all the areas within Lake Chalet: the Pump House, the Pump House Bar, the Gondola Room, the Dock ... it goes on and on. Heading up the kitchen is Jarad Gallagher, most recently of One Market, and a look at the preliminary menus shows mostly-approachable items (burger, pot pie, piccata, etc.), with entree prices topping out at $25. Of course, generating lots of pre-opening buzz is one thing; executing a successful restaurant of this size is another entirely.
