Sexpigeon pens a delightful ode to the Mission's The Jelly Donut on 24th St., a mom n' pop with the unfortunate location of: down the street from Dynamo Donut, which seems to always have a line in front of it. Dynamo's donuts defy the genre: made in flavors like lemon thyme by a pastry chef that worked at Postrio, Stars, and Foreign Cinema. Jelly has occupied its space for far longer than the racy hotshot and sells an old-faithful glazed at a fraction of Dynamo's $2.00 to $3.50 per treat-with-hole.
But the thing is, Jelly "give[s] you extra donuts...And each time...[the clerks] are weird and coy about it, drawing out their reiteration of your order (“one olllllld-faaaaashion”) to give themselves time to jam secret donuts into your bag, which they present to you closed-up tight and with a cockeyed grin."
Will the pedigreed hipster bite or a quick and dirty taste of Americana win out in the end? Get thee to 24th St. and witness.
