Revival Remembers Berkeley as "Athens of the West"

"Oakland has had it's revival and now it's Berkeley's turn," remarks Amy Murray, chef/owner of Revival Bar + Kitchen, soft-opening tonight with the Farmer Jane book launch party. And if 200 attendees sounds like a lot to expect for this evening's affair, the neighborhood might have its kickstart. The festivities will live on in the form of a fixture "Farmer Jane" cocktail on Revival's bar menu, focused on seasonal, "vitalitarian" offerings soon to be made using herbs from an on-site garden. Keeping in step with this theme, Murray, a self-described "vagabond gypsy," also has a regular rotation of farm sources in tow, including McCormack Ranch and Lucky Dog (see the pre-preliminary menu after the hop).

Interior-wise, Michael Brennan executed an homage to turn-of-the-century Berkeley a.k.a. "Athens of the West," with a Victorian color palate, hurricane lamps and exposed pipes. He even used pre-existing elements like the former spot's host stand to create new furnishings like the existing host stand. Friends and family dinners have the weekend fully committed and the official opening happens Tuesday.

Here's an idea of what they'll be serving, derived from the internal training menu:

fried Pozzi Farm sweetbreads, onion rings, curry aioli
asparagus and beef marrow flatbread with green garlic pistou
grilled Lucky Dog beef heart with celery salsa verde
grilled local sardines with white bean puree and dill-pine nut pesto
Marin farms escarole salad with housemade pancetta and blue cheese dressing
salad of local Bay shrimp, avocado, shaved fennel and tarragon vinaigrette
mixed greens with green almonds, cherries and hazlenuts
"pork and beans," crispy fried pig ears, fresh garbanzos, caper vinaigrette

halibut cheeks with roasted asparagus, morels mint pesto potatoes
duck breast with Carmurgue rice and pickled walnut
grilled Long and Bailey pork chop with pickled ramps and green beans
zatar-braised goat with rainbow chard and pickled figs
free form housemade lasagna with English peans (vegan)

grilled purple asparagus with orange zest
brassica plate: broccoli, cauliflower, bottarga
