Strange twist today in artisan food land, folks: John Scharffenberger, who co-founded the Bay Area's renowned Scharffenberger Berger Chocolate Maker, has moved on from cacao to soy. Hodo Soy Beanery, the Bay Area’s only maker of artisan organic soy milk, tofu and yuba; just announced Scharffenberger's appointment as company CEO. Apparently Hodo's tofu master got Scharffenberger hooked on his artisan tofu; and the rest was history. Interestingly Scharffenberger is no longer involved with Scharffenberger Cellars, the sparkling wine company he also founded; but continues to advise the chocolate maker in their sourcing, even though the company was bought by The Hershey Co. in 2005.
