Marengo Unloads Sliders and Whiskey Aplenty on Union Street

New, 1 comment

Joining this week's slew of grand openings across town, is Marengo on Union, which will start serving its slider-centric menu tomorrow at 5 p.m. You'll see in the pre-opening imagery here, the restaurant's retractable roof remains a huge incentive for day time dining, all the surfaces of the old U Street Lounge have been entirely redone, the bar has been re-shaped (so that it's no longer a "U") and flat screen TV's, custom light fixtures and a communal table have been added. But the biggest changes here are in the food and drink department.

Of the eight sliders on the menu, owners Kevin Toomajian and Jim Gruettner told Eater HQ the Pozzi Farms lamb slider with halloumi came out of the gate strong at Saturday's friends and family event; although chef Rayna Toomajian's personal favorite seems to be the coconut shrimp slider. All of these mini sandwiches are on freshly-baked bread from Chestnut Bakery and are available "protein style" with a lettuce wrap instead of bread. You can cap off the meal with one of several "dessert sliders," including a mini THCO chocolate chip cookie sandwich stuffed with Mitchell's ice cream. An international whiskey selection will eventually be organized into pairing flights and a slider brunch with biscuits is on the way in the next month or so. As always, we'll be eagerly awaiting your early reports via the tip line. [Update: Toomajian writes in that there may be some changes to the menu linked above before the opening tomorrow.] [EaterWire]
