JAKE GODBY WIRE - Owner of curiously flavored ice cream purveyor, Humphry Slocombe, traveled to savory land to conceive of a sandwich to be served at Pal's Takeaway tomorrow as part of the guest chef program we mentioned a bit ago. So look out for his smoked salmon, egg salad and olive tapenade concoction on light rye on the Pal's Twitter feed tomorrow. Godby also wants you to know that Ryan Farr started serving his vegan coconut-pluot-cinnamon popsicles at his Ferry Building 4505 Meats stall on Thursdays; and he is particularly enjoying the sweet corn- and candy cap mushroom-flavored ice creams at Humphry Slocombe right now. OAKLAND - This Saturday, Ozumo, Luka’s, Picán and Era will throw the Uptown Block Party & Back to School Fundraiser for several Oakland public schools. Twenty dollars buys a cocktail at each spot and access to food specials offered that night, like a sushi sampler at Ozumo, Southern barbecue at Picán and dollar oysters at Luka’s. There will also be a DJ and they are hoping for some dancing outside. Proceeds go to Crocker Highlands Elementary, Westlake Middle School, Oakland Tech High School and Laney Community College. MISSION - GrubStreet caught up with Charles Phan on Saturday and found out that he'll be doing an Asian concept with a bar, not another outpost of Out the Door, in the original location on Valencia Street. Phan says we may have to wait up to a year until the permits and everything are sorted and he hasn't decided on a name yet. But this is big, nonetheless. [GrubStreet]
DOWNTOWN - Continuing the retro eating and drinking trend that's been rolling along all over the city, The Big 4 Restaurant at The Huntington Hotel will start doing Mad Men-themed dinners next Wednesday. Things like chicken Kiev and surf & turf will be featured weekly in a rotation of four different $35 fixed price menu options. Classic cocktails, like gimlets, will also be offered; and they're planning to keep this up until October 27th. [EaterWire]
