Diamond Lil Bustaurant Readies For Public Debut Next Month

There have been some rumblings about the '57 Greyhound bus called Diamond Lil that's been retro-fitted to serve as your new Bay Area dining destination. After a quick-and-dirty trial run in April at Broc Cellars in Berkeley, the bus went down to LA for a major facelift. She was stripped down to a skeletal state; then furnishings, a kitchen, and the infrastructure for a bathroom, refrigeration and other necessities were installed. Lil now boasts temporary benches and plywood counters so owners Kai Schoenhals and Daniel Isberg can host events, called "Free Range Dinners," for up to 1000 guests at "undisclosed locations" wherever the bus can safely drive. These events are helping them decide precisely how to complete the build out with more expensive kitchen technology and furnishings.

Just ask Stanlee Gatti, Charles Schwab and Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc staff how things are going; they've all had customized Lil experiences. Here's another curiosity peaker: Schoenhals and Isberg have already had their fare share of success in Europe with things like the bar concept for the Warsaw InterContinental and a restaurant and wine bar called Kom that drew Town & Country's attention with its thought-provoking design features. The public will get its first chance to see what these two can do out of bus on September 11th at Donkey and Goat Winery's Fall release party. They'll be serving up such delicacies as vegetarian paella and possibly pork belly sliders using the bus as ground zero for an explosion of revelers. In addition to future public events, further Diamond Lil developments are quite mysterious and intriguing as of now. The owners have told us they have two TV shows in the works and they'll be opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant in an existing restaurant space in Hayes Valley in the coming months. So this isn't the last you'll be hearing on these guys.
