A new upscale lounge and private event space called Monroe is under construction in the former Dragon Bar space at 473 Broadway. Judging from the renderings you see here, the 3,000 square-foot interior shall feature French mirrors, modern Italian light fixtures, racy black stallion portraiture, exposed brick and some black-and-white tie die lush brown suede-ish and jewel-toned velvet booths. So, a long way from the Asian-Buddha-and-Chinese lantern theme of yesteryear?

Owner Nader Marvi tells Eater the concept is Hollywood speakeasy: a bit of old glamor meets modern high-end luxury. And they are going for the after-work happy hour crowd here. Translation: not the usual Broadway drill here, people. You know what we mean! To that end, Marvi is going the fresh, seasonal cocktail route and bringing wine on-tap and a bartender with a New York pedigree. Although the space doesn't have a kitchen per se, they'll offer some things to eat like seasonal flatbreads, pizzas made in-house, charcuterie, dips and cheese plates. Also, a rather ambitious music program: management will file away each regular's favorite song so that it'll play when he/she opens a tab. [EaterWire]
