Over the past two years, Oakland's Pop-Up General Store (4629 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way) has evolved from a humble outlet for two out-of-work ex-Eccolo chefs into a marketplace phenomenon of culinary start-ups: the likes of Starter Bakery and Scream Sorbet. Now the harsh realities of running such a market within the law have come to a head. Managing partner Samin Nosrat says "It's not like we were going home and taking baths in hundred-dollar bills...I never made a dollar in profit." The market's last appearance will be on Dec. 14.
