Sam's Log Cabin Pop-Up Celebrates Year of the Fried Rabbit

Sam's Log Cabin in Albany, an old roadhouse built in 1939, has recently become the unexpected stage for a playful, organic breakfast and lunch pop-up from Rhasaan Fernandez. A former opening sous chef at Gather in Berkeley, Fernandez brought home the championship title at SF Food Wars' second macaroni and cheese battle earlier this year, and he also runs the Boffo Cart, offering fresh pressed sandwiches, calzones and such at various East Bay farmers markets. This Sam's gig keeps him busy in his "spare" time, and he's got a New Year brunch on tap for January 2 that you may wish to add to the holiday schedule.

The meal will be à la carte and BYOC (bring your own champagne), with one dollar from each entree donated to elementary schools in Albany. Menu highlights include "Year of the Fried Rabbit" (fried rabbit with maple, hot sauce, eggs, and a lemon parsnip and chervil salad), a black eyed pea and poached egg smoky espelette soup, and his prize-winning candied maple bacon ring-topped macaroni and cheese. Hours shall be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (510) 326-8863 for reservations.
