Campanula, the American tapas restaurant from Jon and Rebecca Rader opens tonight where Iluna Basque and all that Top Chef glory once lived. One look at the menu tells this is a clear departure from the California Italian fare of Frascati, the couple's other restaurant over the hill. Offerings such as nduja on toast, a market charcuterie selection, wild boar sliders and salt cod brandade with Dungeness crab demonstrate the on-market, on-trend focus of the menu by Frascati chef Mike Pawlik. Prices fall mostly between $7 and $12 putting this well into that ever-growing category of restaurateurs opening more accessible offshoots. On that note, there are also classic cocktails (another rapidly multiplying trend) this time by Jason Henton of the forthcoming Trick Dog.
Although the casual observer may not notice major interior changes from the Iluna Basque era, Rader tells Eater he gutted the place, updated the kitchen hardware, replaced most surfaces, added a banquette, tufted booth backs and repainted everything in tones of deep espresso and sage. Regular business hours of 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. begin tonight and they'll stay open to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Please do drop early reports in this here tip jar.
