It's time to get animated about Sir Michael Bauer's annual Top 100 List again. Early this morning he spilled most of the beans in this blog post, listing out the 26 newcomers: A Cote (Oakland), Absinthe, Angele (Napa), Bar Agricole, Benu, Bistro Aix, Bourbon Steak, Commonwealth, Cotogna, Farallon, Fifth Floor, Gitane, Ippuku (Berkeley), Mamacita, Marlowe, Mission Chinese Food, Morimoto (Napa), Oenotri (Napa), Plum (Oakland), Prospect, Ristobar, Saison, Station 1 (Woodside), Ubuntu (Napa), Waterbar and Zero Zero. All deserve a round of applause. Those who were subbed out of this year's list will be revealed Sunday.
Analyzing things a bit, Bauer says he wanted, badly, to put at least nine more restaurants on there; but such is the world of listicles; you dig your own grave. One of them was obviously Barndiva which he hinted would probably make the list in September's addendum to the Top 100 web page.
Remarkably, Gitane with it's new focus from Bridget Batson has returned to the list after being knocked off last year. Restaurants with recent star demotions —The Dining Room at the Ritz and Chez Papa Resto — will probably be axed. Other possibilites are those that survived a bit of turmoil this year: Nombe and Bay Wolf. And then there are many that have been sitting pretty (maybe withering away?) for quite some time on the list: Amber India, Bocadillos, Chapeau, Coco 500, Chow, House of Prime Rib, Pesce, Piperade and Rivoli among them. All will be revealed in this Sunday's print edition, followed up, no doubt by some sappy Monday bloggage about those that were left off. Who do you think Bauer will drop?
