Chef Kim Alter has left Plate Shop in Sausalito for good. After a longer-than-expected pre-opening period spent on the build-out and grappling with unfamiliar red tape in Marin, the restaurant brought its distinct city feel to sedate Caledonia St. in February. There was (and still is) the fear that Sausalito's not ready for a restaurant like this. Then came the disappointing two star Bauer review and reports that they weren't drawing the expected nightly crowds. Alter has worked with the esteemed chefs at Aqua, Manresa, Acquerello and Ubuntu, afterall. And Plate Shop is Sausalito's first restaurant with a diehard devotion to nose-to-tail eating and a pedigreed cocktail program. Scoop notes, importantly, Alter wasn't a partner at Plate Shop, even though her name was tightly tied to the restaurant throughout the pre-opening buzz buildup. All of the above probably fueled her unceremonious departure. More on what she's got in the works —and the fate of the restaurant—as we learn it.
