After years and years of watching the site of Charles Phan's original Slanted Door on Valencia St., things have started moving lately, and now the Chron reveals more salient details about Wo Hing General Store. Chef Michelle Mah, who Phan hired back in May, will help him in the kitchen; the known Asian theme of the menu will focus mostly on Chinese street food. Think jook, noodles, rice plates, dumplings, and approachable Asian "bar food."
Olle Lundberg, who designs all Phan's restaurants, will build out the space with 85-seats, using retired San Francisco bus shelters and tabletops from an old bowling alley. On top of a healthy cocktail bar, there will be beer on-tap and mocktails. Now for story-time: Phan's uncle Wo and his father Hing started a little store in Vietnam back in the day when they survived the trip from Vietnam to China, hence the name. If all goes to plan, Wo Hing General Store should open in September.
