Fresh off Tales of the Cocktail, master bartender Scott Beattie is a busy guy these days. Not only is he holding down the fort at Spoonbar, and having lots of fun honing the drink menu for Plum's adjacent bar in Oakland (ETA Sept. 19th), but he also recently became partner at Mateo Granados' Healdsburg Yucatecan restaurant, Mateo's Cocina Latina, expected in late August. Beattie is collaborating with Granados on a very interesting tequila-driven cocktail list incorporating many of the ingredients that will be used in the kitchen. Think margaritas shaken with fresh Serrano chile-cherry tomato salsa and watermelon aqua frescas spiked with blanco tequila.
There will be about ten drinks on the menu in total, with local beer and wine on tap as well. In an interesting twist on the omnipresent corkage policy, Mateo's will waive it for customers who spend over $20 on beverages. Beattie won't serve as active bartender here, but he will help with the hiring process. Those who'd like a preview of the drinks, should check out Beattie's hands-on tequila cocktail-making class this Saturday at the Ferry Building. Beattie will be showing off several cocktails he plans to serve at Mateo's when it opens. There are still a handful of spaces left, so act quickly. More information and tickets here.
