The Berkeley police weren't having it on Saturday night when the Gourmet Ghetto went off with “hundreds of people in the street” to celebrate Chez Panisse's 40th. Cops ended revelry outside the Cheese Board at around 10:30 p.m. as the crowd enjoying free pizza, a "loud live band," and a good amount of [illegal] booze reached full tilt. One Berkeleyite eloquently describes the mood, “People were gently dancing and smiling on each other with a sense of community pervasive in the evening air...the Berkeley police gradually squelched and finally shut down this peaceful, life-affirming gathering.” [Berkeleyside]
