RIP Mexico DF [Updated: Region En Route, Serving Asian Comfort Food]

New, 2 comments

See here now Mexico DF's new "!!!Mexico DF Has Moved!!!" sign posted on the entranceway—a cute, glass-is-half-full way to tell the world you've closed now, isn't it? The fact is, Eater operatives recently confirmed that Mexico DF is, in fact, no longer in business as of the new year, although owners Victor Hugo Juarez and company are hanging on to their other Mexican restaurant, Chilango in the Castro. Considering we haven't heard a peep from Mexico DF since a chef shuffle back in 2008, it's been quite a long run for the large Embarcadero Mexico restaurant that once nearly thrilled the pants off our very own Ms. Unterman. Mexico DF had a good reputation among some of the insiders in the industry—notably for serving goat tacos, and having a long list of tequilas to choose from, but it probably never hooked the masses enough to turn a profit. Sorry there's no time to pay respects, but we hear the tortilla soup at Chilango is quite good. News of the next tenant at 139 Steuart Street shall be passed on asap. [Inside Scoop learns that Kiet Trong of FiDi Southeast Asian restaurant Unicorn will be opening a restaurant called Region here. For now, he describes the future menu as "“comfort Asian food with California style and techniques.” He'll be bringing in a designer to reformat the interior, and hopes to open sometime this spring.]
