Big changes underway behind the closed doors of San Francisco's food media scene. San Francisco Magazine's food and wine writer of over 10 years, Jan Newberry will be moving on, as 7x7 senior editor Sara Deseran has accepted a newly created position at SF Mag: deputy editor. Deseran is already out of 7x7's offices.
At this point, Newbury hasn't disclosed her plan. She tells the Chron she's moving on to "bigger and better things."
Meanwhile, Deseran says she's always admired San Francisco Magazine's work, and she's excited to join the team with new San Francisco Magazine editor in chief Jon Steinberg, who recently came over from New York magazine. "It's one of the magazines I respect most," she adds. Deseran has been hired to increase San Francisco Magazine's food coverage while expanding the website significantly. Reviewer Josh Sens will continue to contribute his review pieces.
Deseran's first day on the new job will be April 11, meaning she has an extremely rare three weeks off to work on her cookbook proposal and spend time with her two boys and husband, Tacolicious owner Joe Hargrave. Deseran's replacement at 7x7 has not yet been named.
