Fans of Union Square's Max's on the Square (and those who just liked the retro signage) will be sad to hear the diner restaurant closed its doors on February 26. Max's worked its way into the hearts of many tourists and local workers for the past 15 odd years, serving up "famous" soups, "famous" crab cakes," and fun tag lines like "This is a bad place for a diet." Last month Dennis Berkowitz, president of Max's Restaurants World, said the lease at this particular location had run its course, and they were working to renegotiate the terms. Judging from the disconnected phone line, those negotiations were not successful. Luckily the nine remaining Max's outposts are still open, serving all the soup, crab cakes and tag lines a person could ever want. For the record, did anyone ever get a free meal for dining solo over there?
