Jon Darsky's Del Popolo pizza truck is quite literally the biggest food truck in San Francisco, probably the U.S. On Tuesday it will make its official debut to the public. And there's a chance of seeing the truck this week too, as Darsky sneaks around town for some test drives. Not exactly an easy proposition when said truck is a state of the art, glass-encased, U-Haul-sized vehicle that takes up almost two city parking spaces. He accidentally tweeted out his whereabouts on Jackson and Front Streets yesterday. Rumor has it, he's been outside at "Mariposa near Folsom" this week too.
Today Darsky tells Eater that Jackson and Front will definitely be one of his set locations next week and into the future. So far, he has three other regular spots nailed down too. "My goal is to serve pizza all day, every day at different locations around San Francisco," says Darsky. "Possibly the East Bay too." Del Popolo may migrate from one place for lunch to a bar for happy hour and dinner on any given day.
To quickly review the stats of this behemoth, Del Popolo holds a 5,000-pound Stefano Ferrara oven imported from Naples—a must for Darsky whose spent the last 15 5 years mastering the trade of pizza-making with the Bay Area's best: Pizzaiolo, Pizzeria Delfina and Flour + Water (where he jumped ship eight months after opening to get these wheels in motion).
"The glass walls are liberating for both the customer and for me," says Darsky. For now, he's serving just two pies, as captured by GrubStreet yesterday. Darksy is planning for a public debut on Tuesday at Bar Agricole, where owner Thad Vogler has agreed to open up the parking lot for Del Popolo. They'll serve cocktails at the patio bar, and the most design-forward, state-of-the-art pizza party ever to grace SF will ensue. Don't doubt it: Del Popolo is so crazily designed that Popular Science is writing up a feature on it, Bar Agricole has won numerous design awards, and these are hands-down some of the best cocktails and pizza the Bay Area has to offer.
