What many people don't know about common Napa lunch stop, Oakville Grocery is that—at 130 years old—it's the oldest continually operating grocery store in California. Recently, former Ram's Gate/Delfina Group chef Jason Rose came on board to help with owner and Napa heavyweight Leslie Rudd's big reinvigoration project for the business. Today the new look curated by Avila Design is being unveiled to the public, complete with white wainscoting, a new Three Twins ice cream counter, and—nerdy conversation point—excavated oak refrigeration doors from way back in the day when refrigerators were wooden.
All the shelved items—olive oils, mustards, candies, etc.—have gotten a reboot from Trader Joe’s former Director of Product Development, Kathryn Flouton. A private label line of foods is in the works for release this fall. And you should know that the neighboring 100-year-old Victorian house is being converted by Howard Backen into a wine tasting room to open next spring. Now, Eater has a first look at Rose's shiny new Oakville menu, brimming with prepared foods, made-to-order sandwiches, salads, and more—all of it sourced from local Wine Country farms.
