Welcome back to Front & Center, a series highlighting front of the house professionals in Bay Area restaurants. Right now: the San Francisco Bay Guardian's food critic and columnist Virginia Miller on Danny Louie, bartender at The Alembic.
A regular at cocktail-spirits-food haven, The Alembic since it opened in 2006, I always experience great service from bar manager Daniel Hyatt and bartenders like Janiece Gonzalez and Suzanne Ray. In particular, any night Danny Louie is working is a good one. No matter how busy it is, he always makes eye contact as we walk in, ready with a smile and greeting, even a high five across the bar. He casually, yet skillfully creates off-menu drinks to suit the mood, staying attentive to everyone at the bar with comfortable ease. Louie is the kind of bartender every bar should be so lucky to have. His cool style is never cause for attitude or snobbery. I notice how he remains quietly in tune with customer preferences and bar flow, belying his wicked skill at crafting a drink.
