The sign went up today at the new exhibition kitchen and cafe by Charles Chocolates (535 Florida), returning to the confectionery arena after a sudden closure in 2011. The 7,600-square-foot kitchen and retail space includes heated patio seating and floor-to-ceiling windows through which patrons can watch the entire candy-making process. Pending the conclusion of construction and the passing of final inspections, proprietor Chuck Siegel hopes to be open before Valentine's Day.
The cafe menu features a number of new items for the company, including boxes of pavés (the original truffle) and treats inspired by Siegel's childhood. For example, a chocolate snacking cake is his take on a summer-camp favorite, and he'll offer push-ups with Valrhona chocolate (an upscale Fudgesicle) and real orange juice (a healthier and tastier version of a Creamsicle).
