The morning brings big news for the humble tofu-makers of Oakland's Hodo Soy Beanery: 800-lb. burrito gorilla Chipotle Mexican Grill has announced that starting Tuesday, February 12, they'll be using the brand's shredded tofu in a new non-meat filling option they're dubbing "sofritas." Hodo's organic, non-GMO ethos is in keeping with Chipotle's commitment to sustainability, and the new menu option, which combines the tofu with roasted poblano peppers, spices, and (naturally) chipotle chilies, is part of a company outreach to vegans and vegetarians.
If the new offering proves popular, it could be extended to the chain's more than 1,400 locations across the country, which would turn Hodo into a tofu power to be reckoned with. For now, San Franciscans can test out the sofritas at the company's three downtown locations: 525 Market St., 121 Fourth St., and 126 New Montgomery St. They'll also be available at two locations in San Mateo and one each in Millbrae and Palo Alto.
