Good news for local distilleries: for the first time since Prohibition, charging a tasting fee for samples of spirits will be legal. Effective January 1, distillers like St. George Spirits in Alameda will be able to recoup some of the losses they incur by offering free samples of their liquid wares, a practice that costs St. George's tasting room up to $100K a year. The new law does set a limit of six half-ounce pours for samples, though, so don't get too excited about sampling 'til you drop. [SFGate]
