Samovar's Tea Dinner; American Grilled Cheese's Cake

HAYES VALLEYA lavish five-course dinner and tea pairing is in the works for tomorrow night, courtesy of former State Bird Provisions Executive Sous Chef Stephen Thorlton. It all goes down at Samovar Zen Valley, the tea lounge's Hayes Valley location, where dishes like confit of hen, Mcfarland Springs trout and tea-braised short rib will be on offer for $100 per person. SOUTH PARK—Intrepid toast and cheese mongers at American Grilled Cheese Kitchen are pushing the boundaries of what, in all human decency, can be done with grilled cheese sandwiches, and the result is the debut of a literal grilled cheese cake. The stacked 24-sandwich achievement, created with sharp cheddar and Monterey jack on levain with cheddar cheese frosting, goes for $100 a pop. Add fresh jalapenos for $5 or applewood-smoked bacon for $10 if you really want to charm that special someone. [Zagat]

MISSION/MARKETSan Francisco's newest Whole Foods Market is now open, making it the seventh in the city. Located at the corner of Market and Dolores streets, the 28,000-square-foot store will have a shoeshine station, fresh honeycomb, and a "Paleo bar," in addition to the usual paycheck-draining wonders. BERKELEY—Speaking of expansions, a second Philz Coffee location is on the way for Berkeley. Come summer 2014, the new spot will open in the redevelopment of the Gilman District, which will also include, you guessed it, a new Whole Foods. [Inside Scoop]
