Tonight marks the grand opening of Hi-Lo BBQ, the newest Mission eatery from Scott Youkilis of Maverick and Hog & Rocks fame. With food from chef Ryan Ostler, who made the Broken Record's name before doing a stint at Google, as well as cocktails from the prolific Scott Beattie, Hi-Lo promises a lighter, California-style take on barbeque. The photos above show the space's transformation into a 'cue palace, including the beast of a 6,300-pound smoker that Ostler has nicknamed "Precious."
We've already brought you the menu, but to recap, Ostler will be cooking up classic meats by the pound, including brisket, St. Louis-style spare ribs, pork loin brined in hard cider, and smoked, sake-brined pork belly with tare glaze and cucumber sunomono. Other items include a whole grilled trout, coal-roasted beet salad with blood orange and blue cheese, duck wings with a bourbon-Sriracha glaze, and a pulled-pork sandwich with pineapple and cabbage slaw. Most dishes are under $20.
On the drinking end of the spectrum, Beattie's cocktails include a classic buck with bourbon, lime, and ginger beer; a jerk-spiced Bloody Mary; and a rum punch with housemade falernum. Eight draft beers, including Ballast Point pale ale and Magnolia Proving Ground IPA, as well as a house red and white wine on draft, round out the selection. Beattie also hopes to add bottled cocktails and punches down the line.
