Status: Open today
After making the trip from Los Angeles up to SF, Umami Burger now has its sights on the rest of the Bay Area, starting with its first South Bay location in Palo Alto, opening today. (As previously discussed, they'll also hit Oakland by the end of 2013.)
All the standards remain on the menu, including the namesake Umami Burger ($12), and the option to enjoy burgers poutine-style over fries with gravy ($2 extra). As with each Umami Burger, the Palo Alto location has a one-location-only offering, the All-Nighter, intended to be a tribute to Stanford students. Priced at a perhaps not-so-student-friendly $15, it features maple-glazed slab bacon, cheesy tot hashbrowns, and red-eye gravy (which is made with coffee). The Palo Alto location also has some new items that will eventually be rolled out to the rest of the Umami empire, including SF, in the next few weeks: they include the B.U.B. Burger (two patties, bacon, beer cheddar, minced onions; $15), the Truffle Royale burger (with truffled cheese, truffle glaze, and braised short rib; $15), and new fry options like truffle fries with truffled cheese and truffle salt ($5.50) and manly fries with beer cheddar, bacon, and onion strings ($6.50). See the full menu here.
The design is also Stanford-influenced, with a library theme and cute little touches like Stanford trees on the light fixtures. Opening hours are 11 am-10 pm Sunday-Thursday, and 11 am-11 pm Friday-Saturday.
