East Bay food titan Chris Pastena (Chop Bar, Lungomare) is continuing his quest for Oakland restaurant domination with Tribune Tavern (409 13th Street) in the landmark Tribune Tower. The 150-seat restaurant, which he owns with Tom Henderson and Temoor Noor, intends to represent the past, present, and future of The Town with design elements made by local artists from reclaimed marble and other materials from the Tribune Tower, and branding from local company Oaklandish. Pastena told Eater back in September that they'd be opening in mid-March, but the doors will actually fling open April 10.
Pastena was on the hunt for a chef who could spearhead as much in-house food production as possible (charcuterie, cheese, bread, juices, etc.), and he's found his man in Huw Thornton (SPQR, A16, Locanda Da Eva). The bar will pour exclusive cask beers from Linden Street Brewery, as well as a dozen wines from the 510. The overall California wine selection is also extensive, with 100 bottles in all. As for food, early teases include potted meats, Welsh rarebit, shepherd's pie, cassoulet, pork trotters, oxtail soup, salt-cured items, and an assured number of vegetarian-friendly mains and sides.
