Berkeley has an intriguing new Indian spot on its hands in the form of East Bay Spice Company (Spice Co. for short), a restaurant and cocktail bar from Deepak Aggarwal, who also owns nearby Mint Leaf. The focus of the restaurant is on traditional Northern Indian fare like samosas, saag paneer, tandoori chicken, and lamb korma, as well as a few items with modern twists, like tandoori taco plates with chicken, lamb, or prawns. Prices are exceedingly reasonable, with nothing over $9.
On the drinks side, cocktails have an Indian bent, with ingredients like curried red bell pepper in a tequila-mezcal-honey cocktail, and coconut-chai syrup and bergamot bitters in a bourbon drink. There are six drafts from East Bay brewers like Dying Vines, Pyramid, and Linden Street, including two beers on nitro, and two draft wines from C.G. di Arie, as well as bottle selections of both beer and wine. Check out the full food and drink menu here. The former Punjabi space has been updated with more modern decor. Hours are currently 5 pm-2 am Monday-Saturday, and the restaurant eventually hopes to be open straight through from 11 am-2 am seven days a week, with food until 1 am.
