Eclectic comfort fare is name of the game at brand-new Next Door Restaurant in Berkeley. Housed in the former Addie's Pizza Pie space, the restaurant is helmed by Sharon Lorraine, a CCA grad who opened The Purple Plum in Oakland back in 2001, has done catering at UCLA and USC, and more recently worked as a consultant on prepared foods for Whole Foods and a private chef. Henry Alvarez and Dionne Roberts are the owners.
The menu has a little bit of everything: fried chicken, a burger, seared flounder, even enchiladas and achiote shrimp. There's also some Asian fare mixed in, like scallion pancakes with zucchini, a red-curry tofu bowl, and an ice-cream sandwich with ube ice cream. See the full menu here. Prices are reasonable, at $7-13, and the interior looks homey, with sage-green walls and lots of dark wood. Hours are currently 5-10 pm Sunday and Tuesday-Thursday and 5-11 pm Friday-Saturday; they're closed Mondays. Starting with brunch this Sunday for Mother's Day, they'll also offer breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 pm-2 am, with options like quiche, chicken and waffles, and eggs Benedict.
