Sad news over in Oakland today, as the Chron reports that the Merritt Restaurant & Bakery in East Oakland was completely gutted by a fire earlier this morning. No one was harmed, but the 60-year-old spot is now closed indefinitely. The fire, whose cause is unknown, started in the first-floor storage room and spread to the second-story office. The owner's husband says she plans to rebuild and reopen. [Chron]
