It was a record-setting year at Auction Napa Valley, which raised more than $16.9 million for charity this weekend (the previous record was $10.5 million back in 2005). The extra cash is the result of an outreach to wealthy patrons from outside the area, achieved in part by an agreement to bar reporters from interacting with or photographing bidders.
