Status: Opened yesterday
Yesterday was opening day for Cafe St. Jorge, the Kickstarter-funded coffee shop from former Cafe Grind manager Andrea de Francisco. As previously discussed, it's based on de Francisco's Azores heritage, and serves a variety of Portuguese items, from bolo de arroz (rice-flour muffins) to pasteis de nata (egg custard tarts) to especies (cookies stuffed with a spice and anise mixture). There are also more American treats like chocolate-chip cookies, and a selection of vegan and gluten-free baked goods from de Francisco's other project, Test Kitchen Bakery.
Stumptown is the house coffee of choice, and other options include smoothies, housemade almond milk, and freshly-pressed juices. Toasts, quinoa and oatmeal bowls, and orange-blossom waffles round out the breakfast selection. Lunch items include sandwiches, salads, and soups, and she'll eventually secure a beer and wine license and serve charcuterie and other small plates in the evening. With Tierra Mia Coffee newly opened nearby, locals now have two options for coffee with an exotic twist. Hours are currently Monday-Wednesday, 7 am-3:30 pm; Thursday-Saturday, 7 am-8 pm; and Sunday, 8 am-3:30 pm.
