After 25 years on Fillmore, coffeehouse Royal Ground closed its doors on Sunday. The owner, Ibrahim Aljhat, told the New Fillmore that he couldn't afford to stay in business, as 98-year-old landlord David Kaplan raised his monthly rent from $16,500 to $25,000. Neighboring laundromat Wash 'n' Royal also went under. No word on what's next for the space or for Aljhat. [The New Fillmore]
