A brand-new wine bar has debuted on Polk Street in the former Black Sheep space. According to Tablehopper, RobberBaron is the new concept from Lucrecia Torres and Annie Flores, the ladies behind Marcello's Pizza in the Castro. Their new joint looks to become a comfortable neighborhood hangout for wine, beer and small bites (not to mention a truly fabulous toilet).
The name is intended as a tribute to the self-made industry titans of the 19th century. Torres says that they'd like to put a positive spin on the idea of the hardworking (and moneymaking) heroes of San Francisco and Silicon Valley, who are keeping up the area's tradition of entrepreneurship. The owners have added touches to echo that sentiment from the gold trim to the large gold-framed mirror to the gilded palm art piece in the front seating area.
As for the menu, Torres and Flores have assembled an edited list of wine by the glass or on reserve, from prosecco and Champagne to local wines like a Scribe Pinot (Tablehopper has the full menu here). Beers include local favorite Big Daddy IPA and additions like Petrus Aged Pale, Old Speckled Hen and Czechvar. As for food, there's a spread of snacks, like black-bean chorizo dip and edemamè schmear, along with a "build your own picnic" option that allows you to choose from a selection of charcuterie and cheeses like Humboldt Fog and Drunken Goat, along with "all the fixins."
RobberBaron is open from 3-11pm Sunday-Thursday, and 2 pm-12:30 am Friday and Saturday.
