The Japanese izakaya that's been brewing at Fillmore and Geary has finally opened its doors. Named after an endangered Japanese stork, Hashibiro Kou has transformed the former Nan California Korean Kitchen into a warm wood-paneled space featuring a bar, lounge and table seating, plus four intimate tatami rooms.
Korean-born chef Nick Yoon brings 15 years of experience at spots like the Ritz Carlton and Namu at the W Hotel to the menu, which focuses on contemporary Japanese cuisine with some creative Korean fusion. Expect dishes like soft tofu topped with korean-style shiokara, oshinko, and uni; boneless short ribs with vegetables and sesame ponzu; and pork with kimchi. Since it's an izakaya, social drinking is a big part of the experience, so sake-based cocktails and a selection of champagne and wine round out the menu. Hours for the new spot are Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday from 5pm-11:30pm and Thursday-Saturday from 5pm – 1am.
