A new cafe has sprung up in the Mission this week, aiming to delight the health-conscious with streamlined offerings of healthy, organic fare. Owner Lisa Chatham has run Green Heart as a catering business for almost five years, but when she scouted the Mission space as an expansion of her commercial kitchens, she decided that an outpost for a cafe business couldn't hurt, either.
Chatham's dual background as a Culinary Institute of America alum and holistic nutritionist informs her food, which focuses on clean, simple and healthy California-style (read: local and organic) options, and seeks a balance between healthy and satisfying. Examples from the menu include smoothies and forthcoming cold-pressed juices, a "Superhero Breakfast" with chia-seed pudding made with fresh raw coconut milk and topped with superfoods, and a blue-plate special of the day (yesterday's was oven-fried chicken with braised black-eyed peas and greens). Vegan and gluten-free options will also be available in spades. The new spot will be take-out focused, but they do have a few seats inside and are awaiting permitting for sidewalk bench seating. Preliminary hours are 8am-3pm, but they'll start staying open until 8pm beginning in a couple of weeks.
