Estela's Sandwiches
250 Fillmore St., Lower Haight
Phone: (415) 864-1850
Status: Open
Two and a half years after the devastating fire that razed it, the corner of Haight and Fillmore is officially back in action, as Estela's Sandwiches has rejoined former neighbor Three Twins Ice Cream (which reopened its doors a couple of weeks back). In the time between the blaze and reopening day, Estela's opened a second location in Nob Hill, but now the original is back to keep the people of the Lower Haight in sandwiches, fresh juices, smoothies, espresso drinks, and other breakfast and lunch treats. The space still looks much the same, aside from fresher paint and a handful of psychedelic rock posters on the walls.
All the options from Estela's salad days remain, from the extensive veggie options (like the Lil' Caesar and sun-dried tomato pesto sandwiches) to the Smoked Out with smoked turkey and smoked Gouda. Prices are also still reasonable, with most sandwiches in the $7-8 range and a $6 half-sandwich and chips combo. Juices in carrot, apple, beet, ginger, lemon, and many combos of those flavors are freshly pressed and under $5 for a large, and health food junkies can knock back a $2 wheatgrass shot. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 7 am-5 pm, and Friday-Saturday, 7 am-4 pm. There's also one more food-centric addition to the recovered corner on the way: new tenant Choux, a cream-puff bakery that's scheduled to arrive in the second half of February.
